The power of ginger water
Ginger has long been respected for its powerful effects on digestive issues. This carminative is widely used for everything from mild stomach upset and heartburn to nausea and vomiting. It is also an enteric antispasmodic, which means it can help relax and calm the bowels.
But ginger is much more than just a cure for stomach problems. This powerful root has also been shown to relieve migraine headaches. In fact, researchers have shown that ginger is just as effective as Imitrex (sumatriptan), a popular prescription drug triptan that works by constricting blood vessels and blocking pain pathways in your brain.
While some people can feel immediate relief when using this drug, 40 percent of people will return the headache within 24 hours, and it’s often worse than the original .
Even more alarming, however, triptans come with side effects such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and muscle weakness, and in some cases more serious symptoms such as coronary artery contractions, heart attacks, stroke, abnormal heartbeats and even seizures appear.
In the double-blind study, some people were given 250 mg of dried ginger, while others were given 50 mg of sumatriptan. The results revealed that ginger was just as effective as sumatriptan, in fact providing relief to about 90 percent of people within two hours.
One of the most exciting properties of ginger is its ability to prevent the formation of inflammatory compounds and even effectively treat inflammation in the tissues, muscles, and joints. According to Green Med Info, there are nearly 800 studies on the different therapeutic properties of this wonderful root, of which 275 studies specifically relate to its powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
What makes ginger an effective anti-inflammatory is a compound known as gingerol. From a chemical point of view, gingerol is similar to capsaicin and piperine, the two compounds that give chili and black pepper the spice and healing capabilities.
In two studies involving two groups of people (those who had responded to traditional anti-inflammatory drugs in the past and those who hadn’t), researchers found that 75 percent of arthritis patients and 100 percent of people with muscle pain, actually felt pain relief.
In fact, according to researchers at the University of Miami, given that the effectiveness of this extremely powerful root, one day, it will essentially replace NSAIDs.
And because ginger works at the cellular level, it not only cures the underlying problem, unlike medications, but it does so without the known side effects that come from harmful NSAIDs.
As an added bonus, ginger contains several essential nutrients and vitamins like vitamins A, C, E, and beta-carotene, as well as B vitamins, including pyridoxine (vitamin B6) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5).
It is also full of minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. Potassium, in particular, is an important component of cells and body fluids that help control heart rate and blood pressure.
