Apple Pie Recipe
Introduction
Apple pie is a classic dessert that’s perfect for any occasion. With its flaky crust and sweet, spiced apple filling, it’s a comforting and timeless treat that never goes out of style.
Ingredients
For the Crust:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cut into cubes
- 6-8 tablespoons ice water
For the Apple Filling:
- 6-7 cups sliced apples (a mix of tart and sweet varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
For the Egg Wash:
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Crust:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and sugar.
- Add the chilled butter cubes and cut them into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough starts to come together.
- Divide the dough into two disks, wrap them in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Toss the mixture until the apples are evenly coated.
- Assemble the Pie:
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Transfer the dough to the pie dish and trim the edges.
- Fill the crust with the apple mixture and dot the top with small pieces of butter.
- Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the filling. Trim the edges, and crimp or flute the edges to seal the crusts together.
- Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake the Pie:
- Brush the top crust with the egg wash (beaten egg mixed with milk) to give it a golden color.
- Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- If the edges start to brown too quickly, cover them with foil or a pie shield.
- Cool and Serve:
- Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the filling to set.
- Serve the apple pie warm or at room temperature, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Tips
- For a more decorative top, try a lattice crust or use cookie cutters to create shapes from the dough.
- To prevent a soggy bottom crust, you can pre-bake the bottom crust for 10 minutes before adding the filling.
Enjoy your classic homemade apple pie, a perfect treat for any occasion!
