Southern Red Velvet Cake 🎀

A velvety classic from the South! This red velvet cake has a tender crumb, light cocoa flavor, and dreamy cream cheese frosting that melts in your mouth.

📝 Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 + 2/3 cups (295 g) cake flour
  • 1/4 cup (22 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 + 3/4 cups (350 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
  • 1 bottle (30 ml) red liquid food coloring
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 + 1/3 cup (320 ml) buttermilk (at room temperature)

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 340 g cream cheese (at room temperature)
  • 175 g butter (at room temperature)
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch pans.
  2. Combine cake flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cream butter and sugar for 2–3 minutes until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
  4. Mix in oil, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.
  5. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately, mixing just until smooth.
  6. Divide evenly into pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.

2. Make the Frosting

  1. Beat cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add butter and beat until light.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar, then vanilla.
  4. Adjust with milk if too thick, or sugar if too soft.

3. Assemble

  1. Trim cake tops if needed for flat layers.
  2. Spread frosting between layers and on top.
  3. Cover entire cake and decorate with red crumbs. ❤️
