A velvety classic from the South! This red velvet cake has a tender crumb, light cocoa flavor, and dreamy cream cheese frosting that melts in your mouth.
📝 Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 + 2/3 cups (295 g) cake flour
- 1/4 cup (22 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (115 g) butter (at room temperature)
- 1 + 3/4 cups (350 g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs (at room temperature)
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) vegetable oil
- 1 bottle (30 ml) red liquid food coloring
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 + 1/3 cup (320 ml) buttermilk (at room temperature)
Cream Cheese Frosting:
- 340 g cream cheese (at room temperature)
- 175 g butter (at room temperature)
- 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
- 1.5 teaspoons vanilla
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Prepare the Cake
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch pans.
- Combine cake flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar for 2–3 minutes until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
- Mix in oil, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar.
- Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately, mixing just until smooth.
- Divide evenly into pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Cool completely.
2. Make the Frosting
- Beat cream cheese until smooth.
- Add butter and beat until light.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, then vanilla.
- Adjust with milk if too thick, or sugar if too soft.
3. Assemble
- Trim cake tops if needed for flat layers.
- Spread frosting between layers and on top.
- Cover entire cake and decorate with red crumbs. ❤️
