Meatballs are a staple at home. I enjoy the variety of meatball recipes. I already shared my few favourites, but today the star of the show is these meatballs in tomato cheese sauce. The meatball is tossed into the sauce and baked for a few minutes more for that additional extra ooey, gooey goodness!

I would never say no to meatballs! They are the perfect companion to any meal. You can even serve the round meatballs as appetizers. Plus, meatballs are super easy and quick to make. Meatballs recipes just like this always hit all the right spots!

Ingredients

Meatballs:

1 Egg

14 oz. ground beef

1/2 onion, finely diced

1/4 tbsp nutmeg, grated

2 sage leaves

2 cloves garlic, pressed

1/2 tbsp oregano

 

1 c. grated Parmesan

Salt & pepper

1/2 old roll, crumbled

Tomato-Cheese Sauce:

1/2 onion, finely diced

Olive oil

4 thyme sprigs

7 basil leaves

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 can chopped tomatoes

2/3 c. tomato sauce

1 clove garlic, pressed

1 bay leaf

3/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese

3/4 c. grated mozzarella

How to make Meatballs in Tomato Cheese Sauce

Meatballs:

Step 1: Prepare the oven. Preheat it to 375 degrees F.

Step 2: Place the meatball ingredients (egg, ground beef, onion, nutmeg, sage leaves, garlic, oregano, Parmesan, old roll, and salt & pepper). Mix until well combined.

Step 3: Form the meat mixture into balls and put them on a baking sheet. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 18 minutes.

Tomato-Cheese Sauce:

Step 4: In a cast-iron pan, drizzle some olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the onions to the pan and saute until translucent.

Step 5: Then, add the rest of the sauce ingredients and simmer over low heat.

Step 6: To the sauce, add the meatballs and top with grated cheese. Resume baking for additional 8 minutes.
