  • 1/2 cup butter, softened room temperature for easy creaming
  • 1 cup chocolate chips semi-sweet or mix of chips/chunks, optional chopped for texture
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract use real vanilla for best flavor
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda helps with rise and spread
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt balances sweetness
  • 1 large egg room temperature

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Baking
  1. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden.
  2. Let cool before serving.

Notes

Chill the dough for 15 minutes if it spreads too much. For a chewier cookie, swap 2 tablespoons of flour for 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
