Ingredients

  • 1 package yellow cake mix Store-brand works well
  • 1 can cherry pie filling Opt for varieties with real cherries when possible
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk Can be halved for lower calorie version
  • 1 cup chopped nuts Optional, can use walnuts for heart health
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted Reduced-fat alternatives can be used
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For added flavor

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until crumbly.
  3. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking pan to form a crust.
  4. Spread the cherry pie filling evenly over the crust.
  5. Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the cherry filling.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining cake mixture on top, followed by nuts if desired.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  2. Allow to cool before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

This dessert is forgiving; if you leave it in the oven for a few extra minutes, it will still taste great. Serve with Greek yogurt for added protein.
