Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold, cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the ice water, adding a tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together. It should be slightly sticky but manageable.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into rectangles. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Filling
- In another bowl, combine the sliced apples with the cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and brown sugar. Mix well to coat the apples evenly.
- Fill each rectangle with the apple mixture, fold over, and seal the edges using a fork.
Baking
- Brush the tops with beaten egg for a lovely golden color while baking.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until they are golden brown and flaky.
- Let cool before serving.
Notes
Tips: Add a pinch of vanilla extract to the apple mixture for enhanced flavor. Ensure butter is cold to achieve flaky texture. Prepare dough a day in advance and keep it chilled until ready to bake.
