Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a round 9-inch cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until fully blended.
- Crack the egg into the bowl, and add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture is smooth.
- Carefully pour the hot water into the bowl and stir until everything is well combined. The batter will be thin.
Baking and Cooling
- Pour the batter into your greased cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Tips & Variations: Add chocolate chips for a decadent touch, experiment with flavors using espresso powder or almond extract, or double the ingredients for a layer cake.
