Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1.5 cups warm water Should be warm, not hot.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can substitute with melted butter.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy.
  2. Add the salt, olive oil, and flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Use slightly less flour if your dough feels dry; the exact amount can vary with humidity. For a richer flavor, substitute olive oil with melted butter. For dinner rolls, divide the dough after the first rise.
