Ingredients

Meat and Filling

  • 500 g Ground Meat (beef or lamb) Beef gives classic flavor, while lamb adds a rustic touch.
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped Yellow onions are preferred for their sweetness.
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil Extra-virgin is best for flavor.
  • 1 optional Egg for brushing For a golden crust.

Pastry

  • Phyllo or Shortcrust as needed Pastry (top and bottom) Phyllo gives a flaky texture, while shortcrust is sturdier.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat, add onions, and sauté until soft.
  • Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Prepare your pie dish with one sheet of pastry at the bottom, hanging over the edge.
  • Spoon the meat mixture over the bottom crust.
  • Cover with the remaining pastry, sealing the edges.
  • Optional: Brush the top with a beaten egg for a glossy finish.

Baking

  • Bake for 40-45 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  • Let it cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Keep unused phyllo sheets covered with a damp towel to prevent drying out. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the fridge or frozen for later use.
