Ingredients (makes 4 burgers):
1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
1 teaspoon salt
Β½ teaspoon black pepper
4 slices American cheese (or cheddar)
4 burger buns, toasted
1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns)
Optional toppings:
Lettuce
Tomato slices
Pickles
Red onion rings
Ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise
Instructions:
Form the patties:
Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape into patties about ΒΎ inch thick.
Press a small dimple in the center of each patty (prevents puffing up while cooking).
Season both sides with salt and pepper.
Cook the burgers:
Heat a skillet, griddle, or grill over medium-high heat.
Cook patties for about 3β4 minutes per side (medium), or until desired doneness.
Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking. Cover until melted.
Toast the buns:
Spread butter on the insides of buns. Toast on the skillet or grill until golden.
Assemble the burgers:
Place patties on buns. Add your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and sauces.
Serve hot:
